I recently started this habit of writing a few hundred words every day, and I’ve started to notice the subtle positive changes in the clarity of my communication.
Most of the time, when I’m writing something, it’s a text that I’m sending to friends.
A text that is full of slang and unnecessary filler words.
I may be pulling this out of my ass, but I believe that type of texting does more harm than you would think.
It just feels like all of that texting makes me a less clear thinker.
So to stop that from happening, I started the habit of power business writing every day on any topic I choose.
I freestyle the entire thing and make sure to just write down what comes to mind, and I’ve seen that the mind to words connection has been improving.
I believe this daily habit I’ve created will eventually lead to a state where the thoughts in my head and the way I’m able to communicate that (either out loud or by writing), will match perfectly.
At that point, my speech will have two wonderful characteristics.
One, it’ll be very smooth and the train of thought will be easy to follow.
My thoughts will be simple and I won’t have to explain anything in depth.
Two, I will be able to speak or write immediately as the thoughts enter my head.
Well, not immediately, but much faster than before.
This introduces a sense of honesty and clarity that was lacking previously.
I also write every day because it’s a way to clear my mind and get out the important things I want to say, but to do it in a way that I can always come back to it.
In addition to writing a short blog post, I started a new habit of answering Peter Thiel’s infamous question once a day.
The question is “what important truth do you believe in that most people would disagree with you on.” This question is one of the best exercises to begin a process of deep, independent thinking.
Many of the greatest achievements of your life will be based on the things you do or think that no one else will.
Peter Thiel calls these secrets.
This question, if answered correctly and honestly, can also lead to many amazing monopoly-type businesses.
Airbnb was born on the secret that individuals would invite strangers into their homes for passive income.
Coinbase was built on the secret that cryptocurrency will be massive, and there needs to be a trusted exchange to facilitate transactions.
Hopefully, this thought experiment will lead to some crazy ideas of my own, and if not, at least it’ll make me into a first-principles thinker which is one of the greatest skills to have nowadays.
